FSSAI Food License Registration

Under Section 31 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every Food Business Operator (FBO) in India engaged in the manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution, or retailing of food products must hold an active FSSAI registration or license before starting operations. Operating without an FSSAI license is a non-bailable criminal offense attracting fines up to ₹5,00,000 and imprisonment up to 6 months.

FSSAI Categorization & Turnover Benchmarks:

1. Basic FSSAI Registration (Form A):

• Eligibility: Petty food manufacturers, street vendors, small canteens, home bakers, cloud kitchens, and hawkers with an annual turnover up to ₹12 Lakhs.
• Production Limit: Up to 100 kg/litres per day.

1. State FSSAI License (Form B):

• Eligibility: Mid-sized food manufacturers, commercial restaurants, cloud kitchen chains, caterers, hotels (up to 4-star), and wholesale distributors with an annual turnover between ₹12 Lakhs and ₹20 Crores.
• Production Limit: Up to 2 Metric Tonnes per day.

1. Central FSSAI License:

• Eligibility: Large food manufacturing conglomerates with annual turnover exceeding ₹20 Crores, 100% Export Oriented Units (EOUs), food importers/exporters, food e-commerce platforms, dark store chains, and entities operating across multiple states with a head office.
